M Key Activation Instructions

Please activate your M Key immediately and then keep it in a secure place.

You must activate your M Key before it can be used. To activate your M Key:

• Go to http://www.umn.edu/myaccount
• Authenticate with your Internet ID (x.500) and either your Internet or Enterprise password
• Click 'Activate Your M Key' (found under the 'Passwords/Security' heading).
• Enter the serial number on the back of your M Key in the serial number field.
• Choose a 4 digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) and re-enter to confirm.

Rules for the PIN include:

• no alpha characters (i.e., numbers only)
• no simple combinations (e.g., 1234, 1111, 2222)

Using your M Key

The M Key will replace your Enterprise password for selected applications. To use your M Key:

• Press the button on the M Key to generate a random password
• Enter the displayed password followed by your PIN (no punctuation or spaces between the two) in the password field online.

Note: the random password on the M Key can only be used once. Each time you attempt to log in, you'll need to push the button on the M Key to generate a new random password.
